Sunday Lectionary Scripture Study

Wednesdays at 6:30pm in the Hall

Biblical Study related to the Scripture passages of the Sunday Lectionary Readings: Focusing on the Liturgy of the Word for the following Sunday, you will explore the inspired Word of God to see how God speaks to us in the various passages of the Bible.

Bring a New American Standard Study Bible if you have one. If you’d like to get on the email list for the weekly distribution of the basic materials, please contact Deacon Tom at deacontomc@gmail.com. Parish Faith Formation

Children’s C.C.D. Classes Will Start the Week of September 10th 

On Saturday, September 9th at 9:30 am, there is a meeting for parents (only) that are planning to enroll their children in Levels 1, 3/4, and 5/6. Level 2 parents (for children who attended last year’s 1st Level) should also attend the Saturday meeting.

On Sunday, September 10th, the student and parents in the 2nd year Confirmation class are asked to attend a meeting (in lieu of class) at 2:00 pm.

RCIA (Adult Religious Education)

This class is for adults who would like to become a practicing Catholic and receive the sacrament of Baptism, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation. In this way, you will learn and understand the fundamentals of the Catholic Church. Classes begin on Monday, September 18th at 7:00 pm, and run through the end of March.

This class is also open for those of you who are already Catholic, but would like a refresher course. Take advantage of this opportunity to get re-grounded in what our Catholic Church and Faith is all about.

Registrations are being accepted for all  CCD classes and RCIA.
Please sign-up in the  Parish Office during the weekday (Mon.-Fri., 9am-12pm & 1-5pm).

A Birthday Gift for Our Lady

As a birthday present for your spiritual mother, present her with the best possible gift – adoration of her Son. Fortunately, you can do so easily by attending our 24-hour Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament beginning this Friday, September 1, after the 8am Mass and concluding Saturday, September 2, before the start of the 8am Mass.

Thank you to all who have committed themselves to First Friday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Without your commitment, this program would not be possible.

Spiritual Education Opportunities

The Institute for Pastoral Ministry (IPM) will be kicking off their Fall Schedule in September. Courses being offered include the following:

  • Old Testament: Overview of the Literature of the Hebrew Scriptures – (10) Mondays from 9/11 to 11/13/17
  • Foundational Theology: Basic issues and first questions of Theology (the study of God) – (9) Wednesdays from 9/13 to 11/15/17
  • Luther: Martin Luther’s life and teachings and the Catholic response – (9) Wednesdays from 9/13 to 11/15/17 (Our own Deacon Tom will be taking this course.)

Women’s Fall Retreat

Six ladies from our parish have registered for our fall retreat at Sacred Heart Retreat House on Sept. 15-17, 2017. Eucharistic Adoration & Exposition

St. Mary’s by the Sea opens the Church for Eucharistic Adoration every Monday through Friday from 1:00 to 4:30 pm. On Thursdays, the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be recited at 3 pm and we will have Eucharistic Exposition (where the Blessed Sacrament is displayed outside the tabernacle in the monstrance for adoration by the faithful) from 3:00 to 7:30 pm, closing with Benediction (praying the rosary and receiving a blessing with the Host) at 7:30 pm.

 

 

Pilgrimage to Lourdes, Fatima & Segovia

Pilgrimage with Fr. Quang Chu

for the 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions

Come join Fr. Quang in September 2017 on a pilgrimage to France, Spain and Portugal. You will visit Lourdes for Our Blessed Mother’s birthday, see Segovia at its best, join many thousands of pilgrims from around the world for the Anniversary celebration in Fatima, and finish with a spiritual walk of the Camino in Santiago de Compostela.

Rummage Sale 2017

We will be collecting your *donated items for the Rummage Sale

June 10th – 15th, 10am-5pm ONLY!

(No drop-offs unless we are able to put them in the Hall! We cannot leave items blocking entrance ways or in the parking lot. And there is NO bin in the back parking lot this year for collecting.)

Because this is a 1-week job, we will ONLY be accepting nice, SELLABLE items. PLEASE use your best judgement when bringing something.

WE CANNOT ACCEPT THE FOLLOWING:

-Anything broken, dirty, torn, stained, unsanitary (used bathing suits and worn underwear, or ANY opened packages of anything not individually wrapped).

-We won’t have time to fix, match, or clean items… So we’re asking for QUALITY this year instead of QUANTITY, please! 

Also different this year:  There will be NO pick-up or delivery service for any items, near or far, large or small or numerous. We just don’t have the capable man-power to do so

 Pancake Breakfast

The SMBS Parish Knights of Columbus is sponsoring a pancake breakfast, Sunday, June 4th. Join your fellow parishioners for a Breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausage, pancakes, bacon, coffee and juice after the first three morning Masses. Adults $7, Children $4 and Families $20 (up to 5 members).
Proceeds benefit the Knights Seminarian Scholarship Program, Pro-Life Activities and St. Mary’s By The Sea Parish needs.

Special Mother’s Day Offering

For this Mother’s Day (May 14th), please consider a monetary gift to honor a special mother or other loved one in your life, whether alive or deceased. A gift to  St. Mary’s by the Sea in the name of beloved relatives or friends is a unique way to celebrate the life and memory of special individuals in your life.

If you would like to participate, please use one of the special “Mother’s Day Offering” envelopes located in the pews. Include the name of your mother (or other special person) to be remembered and enclose your donation. You may put your envelopes in either the Collection Basket or you may drop it by the Office. If your gift is received by Wednesday, May 10th, we will put the name of your loved one in the Mother’s  Day bulletin.

Lending Library

St. Mary’s by the Sea now has a Lending Library available to all located in Fr. Johnson Hall. It will contain Catholic books approved by the Church. You may check one out by using the Sign In/Out sheet. Please limit yourself to one book per person.

Our Heavenly Queen

In May, the month in which we honor Mary, the Mother of God, let us show our appreciation for our heavenly mother by visiting her Son during First Friday 24-Hour Adoration, which begins at 9am Friday, May 5 to 8am Saturday, May 6.

Thank you to all who have committed themselves to First Friday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Without your commitment, this program would not be possible.

Memorial Day Remembrances

For this Memorial Day, please consider a monetary gift to honor a special person who served his or her country and has now passed. A gift to St. Mary’s in the name of deceased relatives or friends is a unique way to remember them for their service.

If you would like to participate, please use one of the special “Memorial Day Offering” envelopes in the pews. Include the name of the person to be remembered and enclose your donation. You may then put your envelope in the Collection Basket and we will put them on the Altar during Mass on Memorial Day. If your gift is received by Wednesday, May 24th, we will put the name of the person in the May 28th bulletin.

Easter Lily Sale

The Knights of Columbus are selling Easter Lilies after all the Masses this weekend. The plants can be taken home or donated to the Church to decorate the Altar and dedicated “in loving memory of” or “in honor of” if you so desire.

         Easter Flowers

We like our church to be particularly beautiful at this special time of the year. If you would like to help with the decorations, please plan to bring lilies and tulips to the rectory by  April 12th.

Annual Chrism Mass

The Annual Chrism Mass for the Blessing of the Holy Oils and Renewal of Priestly Commitment will be celebrated at Christ Cathedral Arboretum on Monday of Holy Week, April 10, 2017 from             5:30-6:30pm. Bishop Kevin Vann will be presiding. The Oil of the Sick and the Oil of the Catechumen will be blessed and the Oil of Sacred Chrism will be consecrated for use in each of the parishes at this diocesan celebration. Bishop Kevin encourages the elect to attend. The Church is located at 13280 Chapman Avenue in Garden Grove.

Pontifical Good Friday Collection

Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land. Your support helps the church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools and offer religious education. The Pontifical Good Friday Collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines. The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. In these times of crisis, the Pontifical Good Friday Collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. April Showers Baby Bottle Campaign

Last weekend was the start of our April Showers Baby Bottle Campaign for Pro-Life. Parishioners can take home a baby bottle provided by us, fill it with all of their spare change and return the bottle by Apr. 30th. All your donations will go towards helping women who have chosen life for their babies.
